Clandestine Spots: 6 Speakeasies Worth Seeking

Speakeasies—those small and hidden drinking spots that were popular in the 1920s—are now sprouting left and right in the metro. Apparently, the clandestine quality of these bars can be quite charming for the millennial set who may be too tired to go to a tugs-tugs club after work. Here are six hidden bars where you can have relaxing drinks… and conversations you can actually hear.

Are you ready to put those tequila-shot-filled walwal nights to rest? Go ahead! There are plenty of alternatives to tugs-tugs clubs where you can actually hear your fam speak. Enter speakeasies. In the last few years, these prohibition era-inspired “secret” bars have popped up in the strangest corners in the metro. If you’re looking for an after-hour haven where you can enjoy quality drinks ranging from cheap beers to signature cocktails, then try these highly recommended speakeasies:

Blind Pig is the granddaddy of speakeasies in the country.  It gained popularity after the guys on CNN included it in their must-visit spots in Manila.  This place is best suited for ladies who want to drink alone—undisturbed. The establishment has a policy requiring guests to ask assistance from the staff if they want to be introduced to other guests.

The Curator is an old favorite among cocktail aficionados who are as discerning with alcohol as they are with handcrafted coffee. The cocktail bar can be accessed through the sliding door at the back of the newly opened The Curator Café.  This place made it to Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2016 list with the combination of high quality drinks and innovative bartenders. Some talents behind the bar have represented the country in international bartending competitions.

Tucked inside Lazy Bastard burger joint is another bar that made it to Asia’s Top 50. But the bartenders of ABV are far from being lazy bastards. They are more than willing to craft cocktails that will suit your mood and taste with their extensive collection of spirits, including some exotic absinthe.

For those working in BGC, Bank Bar is a “convenient” choice. It can be accessed through a fake storage room inside a 7/11 store.  Try its Snickers-infused bourbon drink, if you’re feeling a little adventurous.

Besides being the only one in the list located inside a mall, what makes Prohibition different is it turns into an exclusive club during weekends and special occasions. It also has a spacious balcony where you can drink al fresco with a lovely view of Makati Avenue. To find this hidden gem, enter the red fire exit door at Dillinger’s.

The antique-looking wardrobe at the back of Belle and Dragon Pub may look like the entrance to Narnia but go inside and discover whisky wonderland. Mandalay probably has the most extensive list of scotch and Japanese whisky in the metro. The art deco interiors mixed with Indochinese furnishings will make you feel like you’re in an old detective flick while you try one of its Cuban cigars.
